Organic Peas

Canada holds the highly enviable status of being the largest producer of peas in the world.

In 2020, we exported nearly 730,000 tonnes of peas, with 87 percent going to China. This compares with 606,000 tonnes in 2019, of which 79 percent went to China.

Alberta sells $118 million worth of peas to India each year.

Part of this pea appeal is due to their high levels of protein; pea protein is of such high quality that many commercial protein powder producers are starting to use it as a core ingredient. Just this year, Nestlé began rolling out a pea-based tuna alternative in Switzerland.

Peas in Mackenzie Region are exposed to long summer growing days, which has shown to significantly increase their levels of this popular protein.
